Dr Andrew Basden
Dr. Andrew Basden is Professor of Human Factors and Philosophy in Information Systems at the University of Salford, UK.
After obtaining a first class honours degree in Electronics and a Doctor of Philosophy in Computer-Aided Design at the University of Southampton, he spent 14 years in computer programming in applications and expert systems in the pharmaceutical, health, chemical and construction sectors, before returning to academic life in 1987.
Since then he has published and taught in a wide range of fields, including knowledge based systems, knowledge acquisition, knowledge representation, databases, development methodologies, multimedia, business information systems, human computer interaction, human factors, critical studies and philosophy. Ten years ago his interest shifted from technology to the usefulness (benefits or other impact) of information technology, and it was in order to pose and address question in this area that the philosophy of Herman Dooyeweerd became important. He is now considered one of the world's leading authorities in applying Dooyeweerd's philosophy in information systems, and is about to publish a monograph, 'Philosophical Frameworks for Understanding Information Systems'. He is a founder member of the international Centre for Philosophy, Technology and Social Systems.

- Student to Business Graduate Program – a program aimed at placing graduates in the partner ecosystems and developing their skills for employability. This is a program that can be scaled to many other sectors and even further in the local IT economy
David has held a number of roles in Microsoft including Solutions and Technology Manager (CTO) for the Enterprise Group in Microsoft South Africa, where he managed a team of Technology and Solution Specialists and provided guidance on the Technology Strategy for the Enterprise Group. David continues to play an advisory and consultative role to guide Microsoft’s customers in the effective use of their myriad IT Assets.
David joined Microsoft in 2001 as a Business Productivity Advisor and Solution Specialist where he assisted major companies in leveraging their investment Microsoft’s applications and productivity tools such as Enterprise Application Portals, Business Intelligence, Corporate Performance Management, Enterprise Project Management and Information Worker tools.
David is passionate about uncovering the business benefits that technology and Microsoft software hold for companies. In his role, David and his team of advisors are responsible for assisting and proposing solutions to improve the productivity and capability of the Information Technology within the Microsoft customers and partners.
Prior to joining Microsoft, David was a Director in a Process Control and Instrumentation business focusing delivering complete control solutions to Food and Beverage, Manufacturing and Mining industries. David was then involved with Solution Design and IT Consulting with a large local IT Solution provider. David holds a BSc. Degree in Chemical Engineering from Witwatersrand University and a MDP Diploma from Manchester School of Business.
