We are the gateway to most of the courses in the Visual Arts at NMMU. Students who want to study towards a qualification in Fine Art, Graphic Design, Photography, Multimedia or Textiles are required to complete the first year of their studies in the Department of Undergraduate Studies Art & Design Introductory Course before entering their major direction at second year level.
The aim of the course is to introduce entry-level students to a broad range of technical and conceptual skills including drawing and visualization techniques and a range of 3-Dimensional and 2-Dimensional skills, including design, painting, photography, sculpture and ceramics. In addition, you will be introduced to Visual Literacy, Theory of Art and Communication.

Introductory Studies is the compulsory first year programme for students wishing to major in:
Introductory Studies, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Stained Glass, Graphic Design, Photography, are located on the North Campus. Ceramics, Fashion and Textile design are housed on the 2nd Avenue Campus.
