Welcome to the Department of Music

The Department of Music at NMMU offers a variety of exciting music programmes at various levels.

In accordance with our motto “Music for all”, we strive to make tertiary music education widely accessible to prepare learners for careers in music, and to promote and foster the performing arts in the local and regional community.

The Department of Music provides learners with individual attention from highly skilled staff and offers a wide variety of courses, from Western classical music to jazz to music technology.

Our facilities are among the most modern in South Africa and include a well-equipped library, lecture halls and practice rooms, digital recording studios, three pipe organs.

The Department of Music plays an active role in Port Elizabeth’s lively cultural scene and performance opportunities include students and staff concerts, the NMMU Brass, NMMU Jazz Orchestra and other ensembles, the acclaimed NMMU Choir, and the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra.

Our music programmes are modularized with flexible entry and exit levels, and articulation possibilities with other universities and examining bodies such as Unisa and the Royal School of Music.

The Department also offers extramural tuition to school pupils at the Summerstrand Campus.
