Our vision

The CTLM strives to enhance teaching and learning at the NMMU.


Background

The Centre for Teaching Learning and Media (CTLM) is a unit within Higher Education Access and Development Services (HEADS).

HEADS aims to be a valued centre of excellence that provides sought after institution-wide and research-led services and programmes that focus on optimising human potential and contributing to higher education transformation by enhancing access and throughput rates as well as the employability of our graduates.

Within CTLM the core focus is to provide support for both staff and students in the development and maintenance of the University’s teaching and learning environment.

Services rendered by CTLM 

Integrated Media Services


The integrated media services section renders a number of services to all staff of the NMMU. Some of the key services are:

  • Overseeing the maintenance and supply of media to lecturing venues
  • Setting up and retrieving audio visual apparatus as per request by clientele. This includes:
    • Sound systems
    • Data projectors
    • Slide projectors
    • OHPs
    • Flipcharts
    • Laptops
  • Rendering the following copying services
    • S VHS
    • S CD
    • S DVD
    • S Audio-tape
  • Graphic service
  • Photographic service
  • Running a full video conferencing (V/C) set-up for the NMMU
  • Full in-house video/dvd/cd production house
  • Video recordings of lecturers/lectures for back-up or feedback

 Academic Staff Professional Development


The staff in this section, are responsible for professional development of staff close cooperation with all Faculties, Departments and the Human Resources Division. The training and development programme we offer forms part of the WPSP (Work Place Skills Plan).

  • New lecturer orientation/induction programme
  • Training of mentors for new academic appointees
  • Assessors training - NQF level 7
  • Offering of a variety of
    • lunch hour seminars/sessions on higher education themes/issues
    • half day workshops on higher education themes/issues
    • full day workshops on higher education themes/issues
  • Offering of a formal student feedback service to all academic staff
  • Rendering of a consultative service to all staff of the NMMU on themes/issues pertaining to higher education
  • Conduct research in higher education research related issues/themes
  • Write articles for professional journals as well as for popular journals
  • Render an extensive curriculum development service
  • Keep academic staff informed about the latest trends in higher education via e-mail. Specifically on developments at: SAQA; SETAs; CHE/HEQC and other bodies impacting on our work
  • Lecturing in the Faculty of Education
  • Assisting in the arrangement of workshops/seminars
  • Render a neutral conflict resolution service to faculties/departments
  • Act as facilitators/workshop leaders where and when required
  • Act as promoters/co-promoters for M- and D-students

Language Practitioner


Renders a language practitioning service to all staff members. Proofreads, edits, translates all official documents produced by staff. Assists staff with regard to language related queries either telephonically, through email or by personal consultation

Student Academic Development (ADS)


Our vision is to support and challenge students to develop academic strategies and behaviours to perform as confident, independent and successful learners.

We offer learning development opportunities to students through: Supplemental Instruction (SI), Academic Success team and Writing Centres.

SI group
Supplemental Instruction (SI)

SI is a student academic assistance programme that increases student performance and retention. The SI leaders are academically strong senior students who offer regular sessions after attending the lectures, thereby integrating how-to-learn with what-to-learn.

SI National office

Liesl Smith (Head) who is the accredited SI trainer, and Ms. Celeste Barker as recognized trainer. To date numerous South African tertiary institutions,  which include universities, universities of technology, colleges, military and business academies, have implemented SI programmes.

Academic Success

These initiatives aim to increase retention and throughput rates.

Community Engagementschool

Support students with a project at the Masibambane Highshool in Kwazakhele.

WRC

The Writing Centres provide free assistance to students at all stages of the writing process - from planning and writing to revising and referencing.  Students are encouraged to visit the writing centres (one on each campus, see below) to discuss their writing assignments.
