Lean Manufacturing Group staff

Koot Pieterse grew up in the Vaal Triangle. He obtained his Masters in Engineering Management and his PhD at Pretoria University on the topic of Management of Technological Change. He was employed in various engineering and research capacities in factories for several years and also has many years of experience in tertiary education.

His focus on lean manufacturing has taken him on study visits to Japan, Australia, Holland and the UK where he visited factories and other research centres. He has presented papers on the topic of lean implementation and lean supply at various conferences locally and abroad.

Under his guidance masters and doctoral students from the Business school are contributing towards the expansion of knowledge about the implementation of lean manufacturing in South Africa and in 2005 this culminated in the publication of his book, “Leaning the South African way” and, more recently, he contributed to the South African edition of John Bicheno’s “Lean Service Toolbox”. He regularly publishes newsletters and articles in local media in an attempt to boost the adoption of lean practices in local industry.

Koot currently lectures World-Class Manufacturing at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Business School and Operations Management at Rhodes Investec Business School.

 

Karl van der Merwe completed his MTech in Industrial Engineering at PE Technikon. Since 1989 he has worked as industrial engineer at General Tyres, Delta and at Shatterprufe. He was promoted into management and also worked in this capacity at Coca Cola. Since 1987 he has been teaching Industrial Engineering at PE Technikon (now NMMU) and in 2007 he was voted the best lecturer in Industrial Engineering.

He is a member of the Industrial Engineering Accreditation panel that visits other institutions that offer the Industrial Engineering - National Diploma and BTech type programmes. He have also been nominated and appointed to the ECSA Engineering Standards Generating Board (ESGB) to represent Industrial Engineering.

He consults regularly to industry and currently he is busy with his PhD on the topic of Lean culture assessment in the catalytic converter supply chain.

Amanda is a lecturer on Human Resources Management at NMMU. Her specific interests include Change Management and a study of absenteeism.
