IT Specialist

IT specialists are responsible for maintaining the information technology strategies behind almost all financial, recreational, education and communication activities. They research and implement technological strategic solutions applicable to the organisation they are working for.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR CURRENT GRADE 12 LEARNERS

  • Minimum NSC statutory requirements for higher certificate entry must be met.
  • An applicant with NSC Grade 12 Mathematics or Technical Mathematics requires a minimum Applicant Point Score of 290.
  • An applicant with NSC Grade 12 Mathematical Literacy requires a minimum Applicant Point Score of 305.
  • NSC achievement rating of at least 35% for Mathematics or Technical Mathematics or 55% for Mathematical Literacy.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS WHO MATRICULATED PRIOR TO 2008

  • Senior Certificate with at least 2 Higher Grade subjects.
  • Learners must score at least 25 points on the university’s SPS rating scale. 

 

Please note: The George Campus choice is situated in the Western Cape and is approximately 400 km from Port Elizabeth.

 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The minimum admission requirement is a NQF level 6, Diploma in Information Technology of 360 NQF credits or a qualification deemed equivalent by the department and approved by the Faculty Management Committee (FMC).

Students must have at least a 60% average for the final year major modules of the Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree modules.

·              Applicant Score of 330 with Maths or 330 with Technical Maths or 345 with Maths Lit

·              Minimum NSC requirements for diploma entry must be met.

·              NSC achievement percentage of at least 45% for Maths/Technical Maths or 60% for Maths Lit

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS WHO MATRICULATED PRIOR TO 2008

  • Learners must score at least 34 points on the university’s SPS rating scale.
  • Matriculation exemption/endorsement. Maths minimum HG=E or SG=C.
  • Minimum English first Language HG=E or English second  Language HG=D.

  • Matriculation exemption/endorsement.
  • Mathematics minimum pass mark of HG=E or SG=C.
  • Learners must score at least 31 points on the university’s SPS rating scale.

  • An applicant with NSC Grade 12 Mathematics requires a minimum Applicant Score of 390.

  • An applicant with NSC Grade 12 Mathematics requires a minimum Applicant Score of 410.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS WHO MATRICULATED PRIOR TO 2008

  • Learners must score at least 31 points on the university’s SPS rating scale. 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR CURRENT GRADE 12 LEARNERS

  • Minimum NSC statutory requirements for degree entry must be met.
  • An applicant with NSC Grade 12 Mathematics or Technical Mathematics requires a minimum Applicant Score of 370.
  • NSC achievement rating of at least 50% for Mathematics or Technical Mathematics. 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS WHO MATRICULATED PRIOR TO 2008

  • Matriculation exemption and passes in Mathematics (minimum SG=C or HG=E).
  • Learners must score at least 31 points on the university’s SPS rating scale.

 

 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • An Information Technology/Computer Science Bachelor’s degree; or 
  • An Information Technology Advanced Diploma.  Students must have an average of at least 60% for the final year modules; or 
  • A cognate qualification at NQF level 7 with at least 3 years IT experience may be considered for admission to this qualification. 
  • The applicant will be expected to provide a portfolio of IT learning via the years of IT  experience which will then be considered by the department. 
  • Cognizance would have to be taken of the nature, level, volume and contextual knowledge, which may necessitate the completion of articulation modules.
 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
60% weighted average for at least all the following Computer Science and/or Information Systems modules offered at third-year level. The total credits for qualifying third-year modules must be at least 60.

  • WRPV301 and WRPV302 (or equivalent); and
  • WRRV301 (or equivalent); and
  • WRDV301 (or equivalent); and
  • WUIV302 (or equivalent); and
  • Approved third-year Computer Science and/or Information Systems modules with a total credit of at least 16.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Unless otherwise approved by the Head of Department, and subject to General Rule G3.6, the prerequisites for entry into the Honours modules are as follows:

  • An average mark of at least 60% for the third-year Business Management modules.
  • A weighted average of at least 60% for Database Systems (WRDV301), Project (WRRV301), Management Information Systems 3.1 (WRBV301), Management Information Systems 3.2 (WRBV302), User Interface Design (WUIV302), ERP Systems 3.1 (WREV301) and Enterprise Systems Development (WREV312).

provided that all these marks have been achieved in the two years preceding the year of registration for the Honours programme.

  • Unless Senate decides otherwise, candidates shall be admitted to the studies for the Master’s degree in Computer Science and Information Systems only if they hold one of the following degrees: BCom Honours: Computer Science & Information Systems, BCom Information Systems Honours, or equivalent; and have obtained a weighted average mark of at least 60% for all Honours modules in Computer Science and/or Information Systems and at least 65% for the Honours treatise (project), as well as complying with such other selection criteria as laid down by the Department.
  • NOTE: All candidates shall be subject to selection.

  • Unless Senate decides otherwise, candidates shall be admitted to the studies for the Master’s degree in Computer Science and Information Systems only if they hold one of the following degrees: BCom Honours: Computer Science & Information Systems, BCom Information Systems Honours, or equivalent; and have obtained a weighted average mark of at least 60% for all Honours modules in Computer Science and/or Information Systems and at least 65% for the Honours treatise (project), as well as complying with such other selection criteria as laid down by the Department.
  • NOTE: All candidates shall be subject to selection.

  • An equivalent NQF Level 8 qualification in an Information Technology-related area with an average of at least 60% and including a Research Methodology module.

  • A relevant 120-credit NQF Level 8 learning programme with an information technology (IT), information systems (IS) or auditing focus with at least three years of relevant industry experience.
  • If applications exceed 25 candidates, selection will be done on a first come first served basis.
